D.D.G.M. Official Visit 2017

In a departure from the tradition of conferring a 2nd degree on the evening of the DDGM’s official visit to Brant Lodge, the brethren hosted over 80 Masons for an evening of Masonic Education centered around the theme of “Contemplation in Masonry – a journey through the three degrees”.

In the 1st degree, we exemplified a Chamber of Reflection and discussed the merits of providing a candidate with an opportunity for silent reflection prior to Initiation. In the 2nd degree, we listened to Erik Satie’s Gnossienne No. 1 (1890) and then Mozart’s Masonic Funeral Music in C Minor K.477, reflecting on the use of music as a device for meditation, contemplation and setting the mood for a Masonic meeting. Finally, in the third degree, we delivered the Walking Charge in 7 parts delivered by our officers for our most recently raised Master Mason. This, we hope, encouraged him to Contemplate the lessons of the three degrees, and to give the Masons present the opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to Masonry.

Our banquet featured an excellent beef tenderloin meal with salads, a pasta dish and roast potatoes. The banquet and night’s ceremonies were managed efficiently by W. Bro. Marshall, and the brethren present showed their appreciation for the Lakeview Chapter, OES members who assisted with the service and clean up afterwards. W. Bro. Nicholas Laine also presented the J.W. and W.M. with BBQ aprons embroidered with the Hamilton District A logo to be used at future festive boards and BBQs!

R. W. Bro. R. Larry Hinkley delivered a stirring address after reminding the brethren present of the merits of silence and reflection and the importance of solemnity in our meetings. Lodge was closed in due form at 9PM and the brethren enjoyed an extended social hour with refreshments and snacks before returning home, energized by a delightful evening.
