W.Bro. Eric Marshall of Brant Lodge No. 663, and other Brant Lodge and Hamilton District A Masons pitched in to host “Hops for Heroes: an Experience in Beer Tasting” at the Stoney Creek Masonic Temple. About 130 people attended, with ticket sales close to 200 in total, providing a $3500 donation to the Wounded Warriors Project.
The keynote speaker of the evening was John Romano, the owner of Nickle Brook Brewery in Burlington, Ontario. His thorough and humourous guided beer tasting educated the audience about the craft beer movement, and how craft brewing uses natural ingredients and methods in contrast to many large-scale brands. Also, he explained how the brewery hires local staff, purchases local hops and barley, and even purchases packaging and bottles from the Golden Horseshoe region – driving home his point about supporting the local economy through ventures like his.

After the beer tasting, several raffles and draws were held, further supporting the financial success of the evening. The District Deputy Grand Master of Hamilton District “A” gave his closing remarks for the evening and had his photo spinning the prize wheel. Special thanks was made to the main event sponsor Bro. Rob McKichan for his financial support and service as buffet chef for the evening.
All in all, a successful evening of Fellowship, education and good cheer! Congratulations, W.Bro. Marshall for an excellent District Charity fundraising event for 2014.
